Choosing Your Catering Supplies

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

In today’s economic climate, it is more and more important to watch your budget.  It seems like everywhere you turn you can see small businesses folding, and the catering business is certainly no exception.  To make sure that your business continues to be successful you want to make sure that you keep your operating costs down without sacrificing the quality that you are able to give your customers.  To do this you need to find a way to get cheap catering supplies for your events that are just as effective as their more expensive counterparts.  It sounds easy, but how do you do that?

The first step in finding cheap catering supplies that are of a high quality is to ask your colleagues how they save money on supplies.  They are doing the same type of work that you are day in and day out, and they may have fantastic insight that you have not been privy to at this point.

Another great idea is to look at restaurants that are going out of business as a potential resource for purchasing supplies.  Because they are used they will probably be significantly less expensive than new supplies, but they will probably be of superior quality to what you might otherwise be able to afford. Though this is a great option, it is not always something that is always available.

When it is not the internet also presents itself as an amazing money saving tool in your search for supplies.  With the internet, you can do quite a bit of comparison shopping to ensure that you are getting the best price possible.  Ebay is also an internet option that you might want to look at.  If you have done your research then you might be able to find some really fantastic bargains on Ebay that you would not have been able to get in a traditional cooking supply store.

Another great idea is to get in cahoots with your fellow caterers so that you can take advantage of bulk ordering.  Often if you are able to purchase more of something it will reduce the per unit price.  This can actually afford you amazing savings on certain items like glasses and plates.  However, use caution when doing this to ensure that it has been clearly mapped out as to whose property is whose so that you don’t run into any confusion.

As a caterer, your business is based on the products that you serve to your customers and their perception of it.  Word of mouth can be your best marketing tool, and to get that you will need to be sure that you are putting out a fantastic product you will need to set yourself up with fantastic tools.  By saving money on your catering supplies, you can be sure to be able to put that money into where it really belongs, the quality of the food that you are going to be preparing for your clients.
